This is a side view to the battery cages. The “U” shaped trough is for food which the chickens can reach if they stick their heads through the cages. The tray underneath the food is connected to a slanted wire floor. Once a chicken lays an egg it rolls in the tray to be collected. It is also evident looking at the manner in which the bird’s feet protrude through the wire that such a floor would quickly become uncomfortable and eventually painful to stand on in a relatively short period of time, much less for lifetime. The pain and problems (sores, abscesses, and deformities) created for the birds via this flooring system, if one could stretch the term flooring so thinly as to include wire, are exacerbated by having to share such an enclosed space with other birds. Battery hens in these conditions constantly have to change their stance and jostle for position because when one bird moves so must all the others to accommodate.
