This chicken’s beak has been sheared off in order to prevent her from harming herself or other chickens through industry induced behavior. The psychological well-being of these birds is adversely affected by such intensive rearing practices and they often resort to mutilation of themselves and others. Having their beak removed prevents natural tendencies such as grooming and feeding. Scientists have stated that the physiological composition of the birds indicates that debeaking is a painful procedure for the birds as their beaks contain nerves. If this bird is lucky her beak has only been cut off once in her life, however many chickens have to repeat this painful procedure.
