On top rests one of the former inhabitants and victim of intensive farming. This chicken is one of the many who was simply unable to cope with the stresses placed on her body. Hen producers can loose as much as 10 – 15% of their chickens every year. Considering that some producers keep hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of birds the toll of such populations measured in lost lives is staggering. It is more profitable for producers to cramp the birds in cages because even though a large number will die. Such losses are expected and encouraged in order to reap the highest margin of profit. If egg prices are high, even more chickens may be crammed into the cages to increase total egg output.
