Chickens do not receive veterinary care on factory farms. Many die as a result of this neglect. Many others suffer non terminal manifestations such as that seen on the eye of the bird below. Afflictions such as these go untreated seemingly because they do not affect a chicken’s ability to lay eggs. Abscesses as such not only create discomfort for the unfortunate birds that must bear them, but such ailments also encourage cannibalism among cage mates. Simply, birds in harsh conditions as found on factory farms resort to what is referred to as industry induced mutilation. A cyst like this is cause for other birds to peck at the abnormality. Once the pecking draws blood it will increase, furthering injury to the afflicted bird.

The hens in this picture are located at the factory farm Ise-America in Cecilton, Maryland. This factory farm like many others distributes its products under the banner of “Animal Care Certified.” Take notice of the picture above and determine for yourself whether these birds look as if they are cared for. Who determines whether eggs get the “Animal Care Certified” mark of approval you may ask; the egg industry of course. You can see the deceptive label here.
