      More birds covered in feces from the cages above. Also, notice the bird at the lower left of the picture being trampled by her cage mates. Birds have a natural pecking order if left to their own natural devices. Locking birds in cages subverts this behavior. It may be that the bird destined to be lowest on the pecking order is relinquished to such a medial position in battery cages because there is no other way to demonstrate submission. A lower bird on the pecking order cannot run from a ranking bird, it has only one choice; submit.

      The hens in this picture are located at the factory farm Ise-America in Cecilton, Maryland. This factory farm like many others distributes its products under the banner of “Animal Care Certified.” Take notice of the picture above and determine for yourself whether these birds look as if they are cared for. Who determines whether eggs get the “Animal Care Certified” mark of approval you may ask; the egg industry of course. You can see the deceptive label here.
