This picture was taken in the manure pit below the cages. One of the problems with factory farms is air quality. Many factory farm mass housing units suffer from extremely high ammonia levels. Even minimal exposure to such an environment has been shown to be detrimental towards humans. It is therefore conceivable that the permanent inhabitants of such an environment fair far worse. The person in this picture is used as a size reference in order to denote the level of waste that has been allowed to accumulate behind him. It is likely that the air quality has been severely degraded given the mass amount of waste left to act as a contaminant. The hens in this picture are located at the factory farm Ise-America in Cecilton, Maryland. This factory farm like many others distributes its products under the banner of “Animal Care Certified.” Take notice of the picture above and determine for yourself whether these birds look as if they are cared for. Who determines whether eggs get the “Animal Care Certified” mark of approval you may ask; the egg industry of course. You can see the deceptive label here.
