      Here is a larger and subsequently much older mussel. Through death or possible predator it has been laid open after being dumped on land. Freshwater mussels live to be fifty years old, quite a legacy for this small, simple creature. Unfortunately the longevity of this mussel was prematurely ended along with many of its fellow species.
