The sand that fills these empty houses of a once vital creature has been placed there by a couple of torrential rainstorms which passed through the area between my initial and secondary visits (on first discovering these mussel shells they contained no sand). Evidence of these storms can be seen in the soil around this shell. It is also the cause of the numerous cracks in the soil. This is a necessary clarification as some may assert that they were dead and merely deposited on land post mortem accounting for the sand residue in the shells.
