This turtle at first appeared as if it might be alive. However, upon approach I realized this was not the case. This was one of the largest turtles I encountered. All of the turtles found were intact and fairly well preserved. I believe this was because they were dumped on land in cold weather, a time when insects are not present in the environment and could not cause significant decomposition. This coupled with the cold temperatures acted to preserve what would otherwise have been lost to natural processes. Because these creatures were taken from their winter slumber and deposited in a cold environment they were lethargic and unable to return to the water. This assumes that they were awake, an assumption that cannot accurately be made given that in the cold environment they may have never regained consciousness. Thus, they may have never had the opportunity to attempt a return into the safe haven from which they were taken.
