Turtles hibernate by residing at the bottom of a body of water deep enough to prevent freezing, or by burrowing in banks or other loose material. Turtles depend on the slow rate at which water temperatures rise and fall. During hibernation turtles are defenseless. When the turtles were dumped on land the temperature was likely too cold to allow them any chance of survival. Even if they survived during the day, continuing in their hibernation, it would take only one winter’s night of quickly falling temperatures to spell their fate.
