The massive amount of dirt deposited at the base of the levee has settled rapidly in response to a couple of torrential downpours. Evidence of this can be seen on the surface both in how the cracks have formed and by how the texture of the dirt is indicative of recent rain. Whether these unfortunate creatures crawled to the surface or were uncovered by the rain is uncertain, though I believe the latter to be accurate given the physiological effects of hibernation.
