This type of shotgun shell is called a slug. It is similar to a regular cartridge in that it utilizes a single projectile. The grooves in the side of these slugs cause them to spin in the air thus stabilizing their flight. Slugs are made from soft lead which allows them to spread or fragment on impact causing more damage to the animal whom it strikes.
