Here are a couple of mallard drakes (drake means male) back from a hunt. The shotgun blasts caused such damage that the feathers are sticking to the mallards after being removed from the game bag.
This mallard’s shotgun wound is illustrated on the next page. The feathers located at the rear of this duck’s body are relatively undisturbed and are evidence of how beautiful these animals would remain if left unmolested by people.
The pile of downy feathers under this duck’s wing are actually loose and have been blown away from the wound inflicted by the shotgun blast. The feathers could have belonged to any one of the ducks contained in the bag. This mallard also has some blood on his beak.
