This is a pair of “skinners.” When fish are being prepared (“cleaned” or dressed) to store and/or eat many people prefer to remove their skin. For those species of fish that do not contain scales, such as catfish, this tool is useful. It allows the user to pull the skin from the flesh of a fish. Some fish have the unfortunate experience of being skinned while they are still alive.

Some anglers will strike the fish on the head a couple of times in the hopes that it will kill them or render them unconscious. However, the main purpose of this is to immobilize the fish so that the angler will not be injured by the pointed fins of the fish or the knife being used to cut the fish’s flesh, both of which can easily happen as the fish flops around on the cutting board.
