The next few pictures illustrate different types of hooks available to the angler. These hooks are fashioned with small barbs on the shaft to enable the bodies of lures and live bait to stay secure on the hook. This better ensures that a fish will eat the hook due to the fact that the bait will not be easily separated. These hooks come pre-tied and fitted with nylon leaders attached to the hook with a snell knot. Snelling a fish hook involves tying the hook to the line by the shaft rather than through the eye of the hook. A leader is a section of material between a hook and line intended to resist fraying or breaking that can occur from a fish’s teeth.
