  • "Milk consumption may boost the risk of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, two conditions that increase the likelihood of developing diabetes and heart disease. Researchers from the British Women’s Heart and Health Study found that women who drank milk had lower insulin sensitivity, higher triglyceride levels and body mass indexes, and lower HDL (good) cholesterol levels than those who generally avoided milk. They were also more likely to have type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome; the latter is a combination of high blood sugar, high blood pressure, cholesterol problems and obesity. [2]"

  • "Dairy products provide 18 percent of the total energy and 25 percent of the total fat intake in the diets of American children, who are developing increasing rates of obesity. [1]"

  • "[A] report, published in the journal Pediatrics, said boosting consumption of milk or other dairy products was not necessarily the best way to provide the minimal calcium intake of at least 400 milligrams per day.

Other ways to obtain the absorbable calcium found in one cup of cow's milk include a cup of fortified orange juice, a cup of cooked kale or turnip greens, two packages of instant oats, two-thirds cup of tofu, or 1 2/3 cups of broccoli, the report said.

In a review of 37 studies examining the impact of calcium consumption on bone strength in children older than 7, researchers at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in Washington found 27 did not support drinking more milk to boost calcium. [1]"

  • "A meta-analysis of 21 studies that examined a relationship between dairy product consumption and ovarian cancer risk found that every 10 grams of lactose consumed (the amount in one glass of milk) on a daily basis increased ovarian cancer risk by 13 percent. The study found a stronger link in cohort studies than in case-control studies. Skim, low-fat, and whole milk, yogurt, cheese, and total lactose (dairy sugar) consumption was analyzed in these studies. Previous studies have suggested that galactose, a byproduct of lactose digestion, may have a toxic effect on a woman’s ovaries. [6]"
