Drew Barrymore's Ethics?
In an article entitled Drew Barrymore relaxes vegetarian lifestyle for fashion she describes why she no longer practices certain ethical aspects of vegetarianism. Because famous people sometimes seem disconnected from mainstream culture I have taken it upon myself to learn the language of Drew Barrymore. The translation is in brackets following her quotes. This is a rare look into the mind of a celebrity, I hope you enjoy.
She begins, "I still don't eat a ton of meat, and I don't wear a ton of leather."
[Translation: I eat meat and wear leather.]
"But I just don't put strict limitations on myself anymore. I don't beat myself up. I didn't wear certain designers because I didn't want any animals to suffer for beauty and stuff, and so I literally was dressed by Old Navy at one point."
[Translation: My choice was originally based on ethics because I thought it would make me different, but then I realized that I shopped where everyone else did. I mean, shopping at overpriced stores in the mall may be fine for common folk, but I’m in Hollywood, that’s almost like picking your clothes from a dumpster. I needed to define myself through materialistic possessions because otherwise I do not know who I am.]
"I still shop there, happily. And Urban Outfitters and the Gap - I love those stores. You need basics for stability, but eventually I got tired and wanted to play again. Dressing is like an art form - it's so much fun."
[Translation: I just realized my previous statement sounded bad and I’m trying to make up for it. I almost had a nervous breakdown when I had to rely on something other than my appearance to define who I am. I craved the anesthetizing security of materialism so much that I had to start supporting various forms of animal exploitation just so I could feel whole again.]
[Commentary: Ahhhh…Don’t beat yourself up Drew, it’s alright if animals die so you can “play again” besides causing suffering is “so much fun.”]
