Entertainment From the Horses Mouth

I have taken care to include whole quotes as I find them. Because I believe in keeping things in relative context though, I have avoided this entirely. Therefore, these statements are as issued.

  • Ron Kagan (CEO: Detroit Zoo) - "It’s sad that it took us so long to figure out there’s no way to [humanely keep elephants in the zoo] . . . As clarity of responsibility continues to crystallize, you realize you have to stop certain things and do them differently, or not do them at all. [3]"

  • Ron Kagan (CEO: Detroit Zoo) - "We can’t give them [elephants] miles to roam and a mild climate and the right social environment, so what can we give them? Love. We have a terrific staff: incredibly competent, compassionate, devoted and selfless. If you are really committed to what’s best for the animals . . . well, our staff feels that the elephants should be somewhere else [3]” (in this case a sanctuary)."

  • Ron Kagan (CEO: Detroit Zoo) - "Zoos have a responsibility to educate, hopefully to influence positive attitudes and values about the environment and animals. We must walk the walk. [But] elephants, killer whales, dolphins – it’s really hard to envision how you would do a captive environment that’s truly appropriate. [3]"

  • Ron Kagan (CEO: Detroit Zoo) - "The American public thinks that when they go to a zoo, the animals they see are well-cared for and have a good quality of life. We haven’t been telling the public that animals have been suffering. It’s time to stop being less than candid. [3]"

  • Sabong (Cockfighting news) - ". . . his prize Lemon Roundhead [type of rooster] entry posted the fastest kill time of 13 seconds. [48]"
