What is a vegan? A vegan is an individual who abstains from using products derived, all or in part, from animals. This includes food, clothing, and household products. There are slight discrepancies between the products vegans avoid, but these are usually minimal. For instance, some vegans consume honey while others remain abstinent. What is true across the board is that vegans, unlike some vegetarians who consume meat, do not significantly vary in their dietary behavior. There are three reasons people choose to become a vegan; ethical, environmental, and health. Even though, if done properly, all three of these methods are achieved by switching to veganism there is no guarantee that a vegan embraces all three of these reasons. Some vegans switch for ethical reasons and are relatively unconcerned about health and environmental issues. Others are drawn to the health benefits that can be obtained through a diet excluding animal products, and have made no distinction pertaining to the ethics of animal use. < < < Previous | Continue > > > Posted/Updated: 9/12/03 Copyright © 2003 Jeremy Alcorn |
