What is animal rights?

The notion of what animal rights entails varies between activists. The most widely accepted position is that animals have worth in and off themselves, which precludes them from being used as a means to an end. This worth is derived, in part, because of their sentience (the ability to experience pain and suffering) and self-awareness (enables them to perceive that the pain and suffering they are experiencing is happening to them). Therefore, animals who are possessive of these traits should be included in the circle of our moral compassion, which strictly excludes using them in the majority, if not all, of society’s currently established methods.
